Respite Care

Respite for families is a vitally needed and minimally served aspect of the adult IDD (Intellectual & Developmental Disability) community. Family caregivers are individuals that give up much of their time to care for a person who is older, physically or mentally disabled, or ill.

Nearly all IDD adults in the Tri-cities live with family members, most often their parents.  Whereas IDD adults are living longer lives due to improved care, parents are usually left with a tremendous life-long burden, and this burden grows as the parents' age.  In the worst case, this can lead to tragedy.

Caring for a loved one can be very rewarding, but it can also be very challenging. Family caregivers can quickly become overwhelmed with the emotional, physical, and economic burdens of caring for a loved one. Through partnerships with Columbia Industries and The Arc of Tri-Cities, we are working to provide these caregivers with much needed “down-time”.

We had a great respite outing in November 2019 to see the Harlem Globe Trotters with Columbia Industry Clients!
