Elena Brown was a founding member of MLS, and was instrumental in helping get our first 14 unit affordable housing project built, called Kennewick Perry Suites (KPS). She and her husband Doug had an adult daughter with special needs. Her name was Carmina. Following a family tragedy, the Brown family heirs generously donated the 1.7 acre plot of land in Kennewick, WA that the Brown’s had purchased and had planned to develop as an adult DD group home facility. The land was donated to MLS with the express direction that we carry out their plan. And we will. It will be called Carmina’s Place. Over the next 10 years we plan to build and commission at least 4 adult group family homes on this land. While, this is a very ambitious undertaking, we know that we can get it done. We just need to find the financial partners and sources of funds that we need to get the project off the ground.
The group family home model is a well-established means of providing the low cost housing opportunity and also the standard of care needed. We have architectural plans for a 4,000 sq. ft., 6 bedroom home with separate quarters for a live-in caregiver. MLS will own Carmina’s Place and will manage the facility. Tenants will be qualified to enter into a program that will grant housing subsidies through Section 8 of the Housing Act of 1937.
