As part of our commitment to providing independent living for the IDD population in our community, we are also committed to creating other opportunities within these neighborhoods to foster a sense of community.  We have done this by making sure all our locations have a community garden.

Gardening can have many health benefits for people with disabilities and can provide a source of exercise, friendship, stimulation, and relaxation. Elder-accessible gardens create opportunities for older volunteers to contribute their time and expertise to grow nutritious foods, socialize with one another, and pass on cross-generational knowledge to younger community members. Gardening is also a great way to engage people of all age groups in physical activity.

Our Edison Street Gardens are overseen by some of the WSU Master Gardener’s.  They help many of the neighbors in a local Senior Living Apartment complex, sow, grow and harvest! With their expertise, Lamb Weston’s donations, Boy Scout Troup 169 and many others, our community gardens are bringing together a diverse and positive sense of community!
